Google’s policy against using automation to generate low-quality or unoriginal content at scale has been in place for some time, originally addressing instances where it was evident that automation was involved in content generation.

Today, scaled content creation methods have become more sophisticated, and distinguishing whether content is solely produced through automation is not always straightforward. To address these techniques more effectively, Google is strengthening its policy to focus on this abusive behavior — the production of content at scale to manipulate search rankings — regardless of whether automation, human input, or a combination is employed.

This will enable Google to address more forms of content with minimal to no value created at scale, such as pages that falsely claim to provide answers to popular searches without delivering helpful content.

Site Reputation Abuse

Occasionally, websites with valuable content may host low-quality content provided by third parties in an attempt to leverage the strong reputation of the hosting site. For instance, a third party might publish payday loan reviews on a reputable educational website to gain ranking benefits. When such content ranks highly in Search, it can confuse or mislead visitors with different expectations for the content on a given website.

Google will now consider very low-value, third-party content primarily produced for ranking purposes and lacking close oversight by the website owner to be spam. Google is announcing this policy two months prior to enforcement on May 5, to give site owners adequate time to make any necessary adjustments.

Expired Domain Abuse

On occasion, expired domains are purchased and repurposed with the main objective of boosting the search ranking of low-quality or unoriginal content. This can mislead users into believing that the new content is affiliated with the previous site, which may not be the case. Expired domains purchased and repurposed with the intention of enhancing the search ranking of low-quality content are now classified as spam.
